Architecture in the Arab/Islamic World - A Contextualised Contemporary Approach

Workshop Timing:
Registration will begin at 09:00 with the workshop beginning at 09:30. There will be a refreshment break at 11:00. The workshop will conclude at 13:30 with lunch.
 
Workshop Agenda:
  • Evaluating the impact of mega-scale developments environmentally and culturally
  • Analysing and adapting the rich architectural heritage of the region, and applying it in relevant contexts rather than using it as a source book
  • Understanding the dynamic and hybrid nature of contemporary cultural identity, and the need to express it in built form
  • Adopting a holistic and balanced design approach in urbanism and architecture
  • Contextualising the multi-dimensional aspects of globalisation
Meet Your Workshop Leader: Wael Al-Masri
Oliver SchultzeWael is a chartered member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He graduated in 1984 from The University of Manchester, England and received his Masters at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology through the Aga Khan Programme for Islamic Architecture. Since his graduation, he has designed and managed several projects in the Arab region including the award-winning Madinat Al- Fahaheel development in Kuwait. He has written several papers and delivered lectures, and his articles and work on contemporary architecture in the Arab region have been published in several regional and international magazines. He received several awards including the ‘2007 Design and Development Award’ from International Council for Shopping Centers (ICSC), the ‘2007and 2008 Architectural Designer of the Year Award’ at the Retail City Convention in Dubai, ‘The Islamic Architecture Award’ at Dubai Cityscape 2007, the ‘RIBA Napper Urban Design Award,’ and the ‘Haywood Prize ‘ from the University of Manchester. In May 2008 he received ‘The Arab Architect Award,’ from the Arab Towns Organisation, for his lifetime achievement and dedication towards the development of contemporary Arab architecture.
